Student Peer Mentoring and Leadership Program

Broward College has partnered with PeerForward and AmeriCorps to launch the Peer Mentoring and Leadership program, the first of its kind.

Peer Leaders can mentor and support you each step of the way as you work towards completing your degree and reaching your educational goals. Peer Leaders are current students or Broward College alumni just like you. Our Peer Leaders are trained in leadership and mentoring skills to be able to provide the best possible support you need to become a successful student.

Peer Leaders mentor and support current Broward College students. All Peer Leaders receive a monthly living allowance and various benefits - including an education award after successfully completing a service year with the program. To learn more, complete the Peer Leader Application.

What Makes a Great Peer Leader?

The most successful Peer Leaders are members who possess the following qualities:

  • Academic Preparation: Potential Peer Leaders are students that will be enrolling for the upcoming year and have demonstrated academic persistence, or are familiar with the Broward College student needs, services, and challenges.
  • Social Capital: Potential Peer Leaders are influential among their peers and have the capacity to work well with others.
  • Personal Leadership Potential: Potential Peer Leaders have demonstrated the capacity for leadership and have personal tenacity or grit.
  • Capacity to Create Change: Potential Peer Leaders are positioned to make the most change in their community.

Position Requirements:

  • At a minimum, members must be a current Broward College student or alumni. Exceptions will be considered on a case-to-case basis.
  • Members must be at least 17 years old.
  • Members must pass a National Criminal History Background check- to include a drug screen, an FBI background check via fingerprints, a local background check, and their name run through the National Sex Offender database ( This is contingent on any member beginning their service year.
  • Members must be a citizen, national, or lawful permanent resident of the United States.
  • The Service Gear provided to the Member will be worn at all times during service per the uniform policy.
  • Member will serve under the supervision of the Program Coordinator, Program Associate, and Site Supervisor(s) designated at colleges or other service sites.

Members cannot be a full-time or part-time employee at Broward College.

The Faculty Mentoring Program is part of the Student Leadership and Mentoring Initiative that started last academic year (2019-2020) and will continue this academic year (2020-2021). This is a collaborative project among Broward College, Peer Forward, and Volunteer Florida.
Ten faculty mentors will be selected across campuses and pathways to work with mentees/peer leaders.
The primary role of the BC faculty mentor will be to provide academic guidance to peer leaders as they complete their degree. They will also help peer leaders design and implement the initiative’s objectives.
